Play Therapy Activities & Techniques to Guide the Healing Journey

For many children, a toy filled playroom and sensitive play therapist is enough to spark there natural healing capacity through play. Some children, especially older children, and those with developmental issues, need more guidance, even direction from their play therapist. Drawing upon seminal theories and directive approaches for play therapy, this workshop offers a roadmap with activities and techniques for structuring the play.

Effective interventions start with organizing a treatment plan and requires thoughtful selection of activities to meet specific treatment goals. The purpose and benefits of various playful activities and techniques will be discussed then demonstration and hands on experiences will offer many opportunities to sample and practice them.  Structuring activities for trauma-informed, culturally responsive interventions will also be reviewed.

Learning Objectives: participants will be able to

  1. Compare seminal theories and play therapy models create a theoretical framework for structured play therapy interventions. ( This is missing a word?)
  2. Utilize a decision-making process to select play therapy methods that best meet the client’s needs.
  3. Implement a treatment plan approach that helps child and families carry out their therapy goals.
  4. Practice playful activities to facilitate emotional literacy and expression for children of all ages.
  1. Demonstrate trauma-informed and culturally responsive adaptations of play therapy techniques to meet diverse client needs.
  2. Evaluate ethical considerations and boundary-setting when using directive and expressive play interventions.
